Sediment from River Yamuna on Board- 60 x 48 in 2012

In the work Sediment the artist scoops the black sludge of the Yamuna River, splashing it like India-ink across large canvases. The water of the Yamuna is not just a medium in this work, but a material visual actor highlighting the stark contradiction between the sacred image of the river and its reality of being a contaminated cesspool. Galhotra took a conscious decision to make these performative works on the Yamuna Ghats to trigger a dialogue not just externally, but also from within.
